Large commercial winery and fifth largest wine group in the world based in the city Stellenbosch
in South Africa
, Its origins are associated with one of the most interesting personalities in South African viticulture - namely William Charles Winshaw (aka Oubaas Winshaw), born in Kentucky in 1871. In his youth he was a gold prospector, Texas ranger and gambler, then studied medicine and came to South Africa as a mule transport supervisor. In the Boer War, he was a hospital doctor and then began to deal with viticulture. In 1924 he acquired the Oude Libertas Farm and in 1935 he founded the Stellenbosch Farmer's Winery, where he remained active until old age. The multi grew into an empire through numerous mergers. Even the top wineries bought in 1966 Nederburg
and Plaisir de Merle
in the wine-growing district Paarl
belong to. In addition to their own production, wines from cooperatives and private wineries are bought and marketed. In addition, own brands are also produced. The top line is "Zonnebloem" (sunflower) with pure wines from many varieties. The KWV
together with the Rembrandt Group owns 60% of Stellenbosch Farmer's Winery as a joint stock company.
