Stellenbosch Farmer's Winery

Large merchant cellar and fifth largest viticulture group in the world based in the city Stellenbosch in South Africa, The creation is associated with one of the most interesting personalities in South African viticulture - William McGin Winshaw (aka Oubaas Winshaw), born in Kentucky in 1871. In his youth, he was a gold miner, Texas ranger and gambler, then studied medicine and came to South Africa as a caretaker of a mule transport. In the Boer War, he was a hospital doctor and then began to deal with viticulture. In 1924 he acquired the Oude Libertas Farm and in 1935 he founded the Stellenbosch Farmer's Winery, where he remained active until his old age. Through numerous mergers, the multi grew into an empire. Also the top wineries bought in 1966 Nederburg and Plaisir de Merle in the wine-growing district Paarl belong to. In addition to own production, wines from cooperatives and private wineries are bought and marketed. In addition, however, also own brands are produced. The top line is "Zonnebloem" (sunflower) with varietal wines from many varieties. The KWV owns 60% of Stellenbosch Farmer's Winery together with Rembrandt as a joint stock company.
