The winery is located in St. Helena in California's
Napa Valley. It was founded in 1890 by John Thomann, who immigrated from Switzerland. In 1947 the run-down property was purchased and rebuilt by Mario Trinchero. The family also owns the winery
Monteviña with the top wine "Terra d'Oro". The Sutter Home vineyards cover almost 2,500 hectares of vines. The varieties cultivated are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Merlot, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Zinfandel. Mainly Varietals (grape variety wines) are produced. The winery is a specialist in Zinfandel, both red and white. In 1975, a sweet rose-coloured
White Zinfandel was introduced to the market for the first time, which became a hit. But also wines from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varieties are partly produced as
blush.
Among the red Zinfandels, the "Amador" is the best known brand. Since the 1995 vintage, the M. Trinchero label, named in honour of the company founder Mario Trinchero, has been in existence. For this purpose, a "winery within a winery" with special conditions has been established, so to speak. These include small fermentation tanks to enable small quantities to be matured individually, new French barriques and an innovative fogging system in the barrel storage for better ageing. Under the responsibility of star winemaker Derek Holstein, top wines from the best sites in the Napa Valley are produced from Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Each site is vinified individually and only the barrels with the best and finest characteristics and the greatest complexity are then selected.
