Sykiotis

The red grape variety comes from Greece; the name means fig. Synonyms are Chiotis, Kiotes, Kiotis, Skiotes, Skiotis, Sykiotes and Sykioti. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it comes from a presumably natural cross between Kontegalo x Vradiano. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The late-maturing, high-yielding vine is cultivated in the regions of Macedonia and Thessaly, as well as on Euboea in central Greece. There are also varietal wines. The press residues are also used for the distillation of the marc spirit Tsipouro. However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (statistics Kym Anderson).
