Portuguese term (also Jarro, Pote, Tinha) for a large vessel made of earthenware or clay, similar to an amphora, in which red wines are produced openly under oxidative influence according to traditional methods, especially in the Alentejo DOC area. It is customary to cool the vessel with water during fermentation. Similar vessels are dolium (Roman), kvevri (Georgian), pithos (Greek) and tinaja (Spanish). See also under wine vessels.
