The Presidential Republic of Tanzania (Swahili Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania) in East Africa with the capital Dodoma covers 945,087 km². It is located on the Indian Ocean and borders Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda, Burundi and Congo to the west and Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to the south. Tanganyika (formerly part of German East Africa, then Great Britain) became independent in 1961 and united with Zanzibar (islands of Pemba and Unguja) to form Tanzania in 1964.

In the north-east, on the border with Kenya, rises the Kilimanjaro massif, whose highest point is Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. The climate is tropical along the flat coast and temperate in the mountains to the north, south and west. There is a dry season from January to March and from June to October. Italian missionaries planted vines in the 19th century. In the 1930s, German settlers planted vines south of Kilimanjaro. In the early 1980s, a German founded a vine nursery. In 2021, the vineyards covered 1,115 hectares.
