Italian missionaries planted vines in the hinterland of the East African state on the Indian Ocean in the 19th century. In the 1930s, German settlers cultivated vines not far south of Kilimanjaro. In the early 1980s, a German became one nursery founded. In 2012, the vineyards covered 2,000 hectares of vineyards. about Wine production volumes nothing is known.
