Tavkveri

The red grape variety originates from Georgia. Synonyms are Didi Scaperawi, Great Scaperawi, Kachet, Red Blue Takweri, Takweri, Tarkveri, Tavaveri, Tavkeri Kartalinsky, Tavkveri Kartlis, Tavkveri Didmartsvalda, Tavkveri Kartalinskii, Tavkveri Kartalinsky Tavkvery and Tvtvewri. The parentage is unknown. The late-ripening vine produces fresh, fruity red wines with a cherry aroma. It is also used as table grape. It is an all-female grape variety, which is why it is cultivated together with the Chinuri variety for the purpose of fertilisation. It is mainly cultivated in the region of Kartlia, where it is also used for wines produced in the traditional Kakheti method. In 2016, 37 hectares of vineyards were designated in Georgia (Kym Anderson statistics). There are also said to be further stocks in Azerbaijan.
