Terre del Colleoni

DOC area (also Colleoni) for white wines and red wines in the Italian region of Lombardy. The zone was only created in 2011 and includes over 70 municipalities in the province of Bergamo. The name is a tribute to the ancient noble family of the Colleoni in Bergamo. Viticulture here dates back to the time of the Etruscans. Julius Caesar (100-44 BC) is said to have appreciated the wine from Bergamo when he passed through this area with his legions. There are further reports about it from Pliny the Elder (23-79) and Petrus de Crescentiis (1230-1320).

The single-varietal wines are made from at least 85% of the respective variety, and possibly a maximum of 15% of other authorised varieties. The white wines are Chardonnay, Incrocio Manzoni (Manzoni Bianco), Moscato Giallo (Gold Muscat) - also as Passito, Pinot Bianco (Pinot Blanc) and Pinot Grigio (Pinot Gris). The red wines are Cabernet (Cabernet Sauvignon), Franconia (Blaufränkisch), Incrocio Terzi (Incrocio Terzi 1), Marzemino, Merlot and Schiava (Schiava Lombarda).

A Frizzante can be produced with all the wine types listed above. A Spumante is only possible with the wine types Chardonnay, Incrocio Manzoni, Pinot Bianco and Pinot Grigio. And a Novello is allowed for the wine types Cabernet, Franconia, Incrocio Terzi and Merlot. In addition, there is a special Spumante, fermented with any use of Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Nero, Incrocio Manzoni and Pinot Grigio with the metodo classico (bottle fermentation) and matured on the yeast for 15 months. The Millesimato version (vintage spumante) must mature for 24 months. A special Novello is produced using any red varieties (but excluding Schiava varieties and Marzemino).
