Teufelskeller

single vineyard in the municipality of Randersacker (Maindreieck area) in the German wine-growing region of Franconia. The name has no religious background, but derives from the patrician Teufel family living in Randesracker, who were generous supporters of the Bürgerspital in the 14th century. The addition "Keller" is derived from "Kehle", an outdated term for a cut in the terrain. The site extends from the Alandsgrund in the west in a south-easterly direction to the Teufelskellergraben. Here it makes almost a 90-degree turn in a north-easterly direction. At the upper end of the ditch, it then merges into the Pfülben site. The vineyards, with slopes ranging from 30 to 60%, cover 32 hectares of vines on mineral-rich shell limestone soil coloured red by iron oxide inclusions. The Hohbug (also known as Hobug or Hoher Bug) vineyard in the central Prallhang is considered privileged. The Riesling and Silvaner varieties are cultivated here. The wineries Arnold Wilhelm, Bürgerspital, Göbel Martin, Juliusspital, Schmitts Kinder and Stahl Albrecht, for example, have shares in the site.
