The winery above the municipality of Maierhofen is located near Fürstenfeld in the wine-growing region of
Vulkanland Steiermark (Austria). The castle, newly built according to old models, was opened in 2006. It houses a wine culture centre under the motto "Stage for art, culture and wine". It is also a hostel of the European Wine Knighthood, of which Koarl Thaller is a member. A wine tavern is attached. The business is run by "Koarl" (Karl) and Maria Thaller, already actively supported by their children. Koarl Thaller, a career changer, graduated from the viticultural college
Silberberg and passed the master's examination in viticulture and cellar management. The Styrian red wine pioneer produced a Shiraz for the first time in Styria in 1993.
The vineyards cover 20 hectares of vines in the Jullerltal, Marienberg, Steinfeld and Rosengarten vineyards. They are (surprisingly for Styrian standards) 80% planted with the red wine varieties Zweigelt, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, St. Laurent and Shiraz, and 20% with the white wine varieties Welschriesling, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Gelber Muskateller and Sauvignon Blanc. Premium wines are the two red wine cuvées "Rochus" (Pinot Noir, Zweigelt, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon) and "Moarhof" (Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon), as well as the white wines Welschriesling and Herrnberg Classic. The castle actor Peter Simonischek presented the red wine cuvée "Mythos" in 2010. The winery publishes the house newspaper "Thallers Flaschenpost".
