One of the eight specific ones wine regions in the Austrian state or generic wine-growing region Lower Austria, It was created in 1985 by merging the formerly independent wine-growing areas Gumpoldskirchen and Bad Voeslau educated. The thermal baths already known in antiquity gave the area its name, but it is popularly known as the "southern railway", after the railway line built here in the middle of the 19th century. The oldest winery in Austria, the Freut Thallern near Gumpoldskirchen was in 1141 by the Cistercians of the Heiligenkreuz Abbey. There were rich wine yields in the 14th and 15th centuries. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the area was heavily affected by the Turkish siege. In 2015, the vineyards covered a total of 2,182 hectares of vineyards. There was no change compared to 2009 with 2,196 hectares. The proportion of red wine varieties is 45.3% and the proportion of white wine varieties 54.7%. The range of grape varieties in the thermal region differs from the other vineyards. The two red wine varieties Zweigelt and Blauer Portugieser dominate, followed by the white wine variety Neuburger.
