One of the eight specific wine regions in the Austrian state or generic wine-growing region Lower Austria, It was founded in 1985 by merging the formerly independent wine-growing areas Gumpoldskirchen and Bad Vöslau educated. The thermal baths, which were already known in antiquity, gave the area its name, but in the vernacular it is called "Südbahn", after the railway line built here in the middle of the 19th century. The oldest winery in Austria, the Freute Thallern at Gumpoldskirchen was founded in 1141 by the Cistercians founded the monastery Heiligenkreuz. Since the 13th century, the region has enjoyed the tradition of giving wine, and at the time this was called Leitgeben (Lying).
Rich wine yields were in the 14th and 15th centuries. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the area was badly affected by the Turkish siege. The diseased, Turkish commander in chief Kara Mustapha (~ 1630-1683) recovered in 1683 in to bathe very quickly. Viticulture suffered the hardest losses because the Turks destroyed many vineyards for religious reasons. In 1760 the Order of Pinot Noir was introduced to this area by the Teutonic Order and began to spread all over the region to the Burgenland spread. The area is part of the Vienna Basin and is one of the warmest wine regions in Austria. Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1847-1929), the creator of Everyman, described it as an "immense garden".
The Thermenregion consists of barren and rocky, but also of heavy, loamy soils. The climate is characterized by dry, hot summers and cold winters. The area extends from the southern outskirts of Wien along a range of hills to the south of the spa town of Baden. A beautiful wine route touches all major wine-growing communities. The most important are to bathe, Bad Vöslau, Brunn am Gebirge, Enzesfeld, Gumpoldskirchen, Guntramsdorf, Hirtenberg, Leobersdorf, Maria Enzersdorf, Moedling, Perchtoldsdorf, Pfaffstätten, Sooss, Tattendorf, Teesdorf, Traiskirchen and Tribuswinkel. Well-known vineyards are Brindlbach. Doctnerin. Eichkogel. Goldeck, Hedgehogs, Cruisers, Mandelhöhe, Parish garden, mirror, Tümpfel and To weigh, A local specialty is the indigenous variety Zierfandler (Late red), with the Rotgipfler to the white wine cuvée Spätrot-Rotgipfler is blended. Under the name "Zierfandler-Welt" a series of wine tourism activities takes place.
In 2015, the vineyards covered a total of 2,182 hectares of vineyards. Compared to 2009 with 2,196 hectares there was no change. The proportion of red wines is 45.3%, the proportion of white wines 54.7%. The grape variety level of the Thermenregion differs from the other winegrowing activities. The two red varieties Zweigelt and Blauer Portugieser dominate, followed by the white wine variety Neuburger.
