Therona Riesling

The white grape variety (also Therona) is a new breed between Cape Riesling ( Crouchen ) x Chenin Blanc, The cross was made in South Africa in 1980 by Christiaan Johannes Orffer (1926-2008), named the viticulture pioneer and professor of the university Stellenbosch, CJ Theron honored. The early ripening vine was specially made for South African climates with artificial irrigation and the rotting resistance required. The first wine made from it was made in 1986. In 2010 were in South Africa 99 hectares of vineyards with declining tendency (Kym Anderson ).
