Synonym for the grape variety Mazuelo; see there.
The red grape variety originates from Spain. There are well over 100 synonyms that testify to its great age and wide distribution. The most important, grouped alphabetically by country, are Carignan, Carignane, Carignan Noir, Pinot d'Evora, Plant de Ledenon, Roussillon (France); Bovale di Spagna, Bovale Grande, Bovale Grande di Spagna, Bovale Grosso, Bovale Mannu, Carignano, Tintiglia (Italy, Sardinia); Carignane, Kerrigan (California); Carinhana (Portugal); Cariñano, Cariñena, Catalan, Concejón, Corcejon, Crujillón, Mazuela, Mollard, Samsó, Samsó Crusillo, Tinto Mazuela, Tintilia, Tintillosa, Zinzillosa (Spain). Despite seemingly suggestive synonyms or morphological similarities, it should not be confused with the varieties Bobal, Cinsaut (Samsó), Graciano (Bovale Sardo), Mollard, Nieddera, Parraleta, Pascale or Tintilia del Molise
According to a hypothesis that can no longer be verified, Mazuelo (or Carignano) was introduced to Sardinia by the Phoenicians as early as the 9th century BC, although there is understandably no evidence of this. The origin of the Mazuelo is unknown, but it is most likely the result of cross-breeding in Spain (and not in Sardinia). A presumed genetic relationship between Mazuelo and Graciano that is consistent with Sardinian origin has not been confirmed....
