The red grape variety originates from Spain. Synonyms are Benitillo, Blasco, Desgranaera, Frasco, Graciano de Alfaro, Granadera, Tinta, Tinto de la Pámpana Blanca, Tinto Velasco Peludo, Valent Negra, Velasco Tinta and Velasko. Most of the synonyms listed were long regarded as independent grape varieties and have now been identified as identical through DNA analyses. However, some of them, such as Tinto de la Pámpana Blanca, are still categorised as independent. It should not be confused with the Alicante Henri Bouschet variety (with the synonym Tinto Velasco). The variety is cultivated in the regions of Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha. In 2016, a total of 5,369 hectares of vineyards were designated with a strong downward trend. This puts it in 108th place in the global grape variety ranking (Kym Anderson statistics).
