The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Cannamelu, Guarnaccia, Infectiva, OIlivella Tignitora, Tintora Lanzara, Tintora Nera, Tintorno, Uva Tignitora, Vernaccia and Vernaza Nera. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2010, it comes from a presumably natural cross between Gerusalemme x Aglianico. It is an all-female grape variety and therefore relies on cross-pollination. According to Wine Grapes, the synonyms Cannamelu, Guarnaccia and Tintora are also used for the variety Tintore di Tramonti. However, according to the Swiss biologist Dr José Vouillamoz, this variety (which, by the way, is not included in the VIVC catalogue ) has no connection. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, Tintora was a parent of the Piedirosso variety. In 2016, no stocks were reported under the name Tintora (Kym Anderson).
