There is a Californian vineyard and an American grape variety with this name. To Kalon means "The Beautiful" in ancient Greek.
The historic Napa Valley (California) vineyard in the Oakville AVA area was planted in 1868 by California viticultural pioneer Hamilton Crabb (1828-1899). Part of it was owned by Beaulieu Vineyard, which was sold to Beckstoffer Vineyards in 1993. The vineyards comprise 83 acres (33 hectares) planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc varieties. Another part is cultivated by the Robert Mondavi Winery. In 2007, the property was granted a legally protected status that prohibits non-agricultural use forever.
The white grape variety originates from the USA. Synonyms are Beautiful, Carter, Spofford Seedling and Wyman. It is an open-pollinated seedling of the Catawba variety. Genes of Vitis labrusca and Vitis vinifera are present. The hybrid was selected by the private breeder Spofford. The red-berried variety is used as wine grape and table grape. No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
