The origin of the winegrowers' association founded in 1992 was in regular meetings between ten winegrowers from the two Lower Austrian wine-growing regions of Kamptal and Kremstal with an exchange of experience with regard to locations and Rieden in connection with their soils, microclimate and grape varieties or their management. The aim of a location classification in the Danube Region want to establish. The association was not understood as an elite, but as a community of values in which the marketing of the wines according to their origin has top priority.
At first these were companies from the four wine-growing regions Kamptal. Kremstal. Traisental and Wagram, In 2018, the two wine-growing regions also flowed through the Danube Carnuntum and Wien added, which increased or almost doubled the membership to 62 companies. Michael Moosbrugger from the winery has been the association's chairman since June 2007 Gobelsburg Castle, The winegrowers Philipp act as representatives Grassl, Gerhard Lobner, Gerhard Markovich, Martin Nigl and Fritz Wieninger,
One of the main goals of the project was and is to classify the historical locations of the Danube region. It is based on the vineyard sites recorded in the Josephine Cadastre in 1823. When the company was founded, the terms and the three-tier hierarchy of classified location, first location and large first location were coined. The quality of the wines should be checked through regular tastings. Members see it as their obligation, the characteristics of their area, theirs floors, yours climate (Microclimate), yours varieties and to express their cellars in the wines. The basic principle is that first-class wines are not exclusively based on sugar gradations ( Mostgewicht ) can be defined, but that even the best winemakers can only vinify a great wine from an exceptional vineyard.
For almost two decades, the wines and their vineyards have been observed, discussed and analyzed. Finally, in the four wine-growing regions of Kamptal, Kremstal, Traisental and Wagram a total of 62 locations were defined as "first locations". These are the locations that have emerged as the top 10% of the area over the past 20 years. In Wien was from the winegrowers' association WienWein In the past few years a layer classification has been carried out and a total of 12 first layers have been defined. Scientific carnological research has been carried out in Carnuntum for about ten years, which is incorporated into the classification process. The locations are to be classified at the same time as the DAC Carnuntum is founded.
It has yet to be decided whether the top hierarchy will also include “Large First Layers”. The wines can be recognized by the protected word / figurative mark or logo "1 ÖTW", which is on the label (Price lists and catalogs) is printed next to the location description. The label may currently only be used by member companies for wines from the varieties Green Valtellina and Riesling be used; however, the user group is to be expanded.
The seal or logo of the traditional wineries consists of a sundial and compass (top left). The winemaker tries in a complex environment of geology, Small climate and to orient cosmic influences. Sundial and compass are among the most traditional tools, the position of the sun and moon, seasons and the tension between day and night play a major role.
