Tyrian

The red grape variety is a new cross between Sumoll x Cabernet Sauvignon. The cross was made in 1972 at the CSIRO Plant Industry Institute in Merbein-Australia by Alan Antcliff. Plant variety protection was granted in 2000. Incidentally, the same parents also produced the new varieties Cienna and Rubienne. The vine produces dark-coloured, tannin-accentuated red wines with cherry aroma. It is grown in Australia in the Hunter Valley and Riverina areas (New South Wales), where it is used as a blend. In 2016, 38 hectares of vines were designated (Kym Anderson).
