The Republic of Uganda (Swahili uˈganda] in East Africa with the capital Kampala covers 241,037 km². It borders South Sudan to the north, Kenya to the east, Tanzania to the south, Rwanda to the south-west and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. The borders with Kenya and Tanzania run partly through Lake Victoria.

In the mountains in the west near the district capital Bushenyi behind the Valley Hotel is probably the only vineyard right on the equator. It was planted by the former teacher William Mukaira. The vineyard covers around one hectare on sand and clay soil and is located at 1,500 metres above sea level. It is planted with the Regalé and Staveau grape varieties. The light red wine is described as astringent with light acidity and appropriate fruitiness. With average daily temperatures between 25 and 27 °Celsius and two dry and two rainy seasons, there are two harvests a year in March and September. Viticulture is a niche product, but excellent fruit and rice wines are produced.
