The estate is located in the municipality of Kastelbell-Tschars in the lower Vinschgau valley below Juval Castle on the corner of the Schnalstal in the Italian wine-growing area South-Tirol
(Region Trentino-Alto Adige
). The entire property covers seven hectares on which vines and fruit are cultivated for the farm distillery. The owner is the well-known mountaineer Reinhold Messner. The business has been leased by Gisela & Martin Aurich since 1992, who built it up as a joint project with Reinhold Messner. The vineyards cover four hectares in a south-southeast oriented, predominantly steep location at 630 to 850 meters above sea level with primary rock weathering on gneiss rocks. The varieties Blauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Riesling (25% each), Müller-Thurgau (15%) and mixed batches (10%) are cultivated there with a density of 8,000 vines per hectare.
In the grape harvest, up to three selection courses are practiced with the aim of highly ripe grapes. When vinifying the wines, great importance is attached to the location characteristics with fine aromas and mineral acidity. The premium wines include the "Castel Juval Pinot Blanc" with stainless steel and wooden barrel expansion on the lees made of stainless steel on the lees Expanded "Castel Juval Riesling" in the versions "layer selection" and the sweet "gimmick", as well as the "Castel Juval Pinot Noir" aged in wooden barrels for 12 months (80% barrique, 20% large wooden barrel). An average of 30,000 to 35,000 bottles are produced annually, around 10% are exported to Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In the in-house distillery, pure grappa (marc brandy) and various fruit brandies are distilled. The winery is a member of the two associations Free wine growers in South Tyrol
and South Tyrolean distilleries.
