Valdarno di Sopra

DOC area (also Vald d'Arno di Sopra) for red wines, rosé wines and white wines in the Italian region of Tuscany. The zone, classified since 2011, includes the municipalities of Bucine, Castel Piandiscò, Castiglion Fibocchi, Cavriglia, Civitella in Val di Chiana, Laterina, Loro Ciuffenna, Montevarchi, Pergine Valdarno, San Giovanni Valdarno and Montevarchi in the province of Arezzo. There are also two subzones. These are Pietraviva (DOC area until 2010) with the municipalities of Bucine, Cavriglia, Civitella in Val di Chiana, Montevarchi, Pergine Valdarno and San Giovanni Valdarno, and Pratomagno with the municipalities of Castelfranco Piandiscò, Castiglion Fibocchi, Laterina, Loro Ciuffenna, Pian di Sco and Terranuova Bracciolini. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, Vigna may be indicated followed by the vineyard name.

The white wine Bianco (also known as Spumante) is blended from Chardonnay (40-80%), Malvasia Bianca Lunga (max. 30%), Trebbiano Toscano (max. 20%), as well as other varieties permitted in the region (max. 30%). The single-varietal wines must contain at least 85% of the respective variety. The two white wines are Chardonnay and Sauvignon (Sauvignon Blanc). The five red wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Sangiovese and Syrah.

Passito is made from Malvasia Bianca Lunga (40-80%), Chardonnay (max. 30%), and other authorised varieties (max. 30%). Rosso (also as Riserva) and Rosato (also as Spumante) are made from Merlot (40-80%), Cabernet Sauvignon (max. 35%), Syrah (max. 35%) and other authorised varieties (max. 30%).

There are separate regulations for the subzones. These are Bianco (Sauvignon 40-80%, Chardonnay max. 30%, other varieties max. 30%), Vendemmia Tardiva (Malvasia Bianca Lunga max. 40%, Chardonnay max. 30%, as well as other permitted varieties max. 30%), Rosso (Sangiovese 40-80%, Cabernet Sauvignon max. 30%, Merlot max. 30%, as well as other authorised varieties max. 30%), as well as the single-varietal wines Chardonnay, Malvasia Bianca Lunga, Canaiolo Nero, Malvasia Nera di Brindisi, Pugnitello and Sangiovese, and only in the subzone Pietraviva Ciliegiolo (each to. 85%).
