The most important and with 144,000 hectares of vineyards by far the largest wine-growing region Argentina, The Argentine viticulture pioneer Don Tiburcio Benegas (1844-1910) was Governor of this province. Around 75% of Argentine wine is produced here. It is located in the far west of the country at the foot of the Andes and extends from Lavalle in the north for 300 kilometers to San Rafael in the south. It has a continental climate with clear seasons, mild and dry climate and medium humidity. The soils consist mainly of stony ground with a lime-rich upper layer of sand, clay or loam.
