Van Buren

The red grape variety (also Gladwin 3000) is an interspecific new variety between Fredonia x Worden(Concord - open-pollinated). It contains genes from Vitis labrusca and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed in the early 20th century by the breeder Fred E. Gladwin at the Vine Breeding Institute of Cornell University in Geneva, New York State. The variety was introduced to the market in 1935. The vine, which ripens very early and is frost-hardy down to minus 20 °Celsius, is susceptible to downy mildew. It produces fruity red wines with foxtone, but is mainly used as table grape. It is grown in the US state of West Virginia and in Canada. However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
