VCIG

Abbreviation (also VC) for "Vino de Calidad con Indicación Geográfica", which means "quality wine with geographical indication". The category was created in 2003 together with Vino de Pago, the new highest level of the Spanish quality pyramid. VC is used for wines that do not fully meet the standards of the DO category, but are above the standards of the "Indicación Geográfica Protegida" category (IGP = Landwein). However, according to EU law, they correspond to the DOP level, i.e. a quality wine. The 8 Spanish VCIG areas are Cangas, Cebreros, Granada, Islas Canarias, Lebrija, Sierra de Salamanca, Valles de Benavente and Valtiendas. See also under Quality System and Spain.
