Spanish "scoop" or scoop cup for sherry. A silver cup is attached to a long whalebone handle. This is used to pierce the pile layer in the barrel and scoop sherry out of it. The "venenciador" then pours the wine in a high arc unerringly into the catavino (sherry glass). For absolute professionals, this can be done from a much higher distance than shown in the picture. In the town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, the handle is made of bamboo and the manzanilla glass is called a caña there. Through the long stream, the wine comes into intense contact with oxygen and develops its full aroma.
