The first vines in this South America Land was planted by Spanish Jesuit monks near Cumana on the Caribbean coast as early as the 16th century. Towards the end of the 19th century, European immigrants founded viticulture. The tropical Climate allows two harvests a year. The best wine-growing region is Mérida on the edge of the Cordilleras at around 1,000 meters above sea level. In 2012 the vineyard area covered 2,000 hectares. Dominant grape varieties are Barbera, Varieties from the Criolla group. Grillo. Isabella and Jacquez, Most of all table grapes produced. There are not any Wine production volumes known.
