The first vines in this South America Land was already planted in the 16th century by Spanish Jesuit monks near Cumana on the Caribbean coast. At the end of the 19th century, European immigrants established viticulture. The tropical Climate allows two crops a year. The best wine-growing region is Mérida on the edge of the Cordilleras in about 1,000 meters above sea level. In 2012, the vineyard covered 2,000 hectares. Predominant grape varieties are Barbera, Varieties from the Criolla group. Grillo. Isabella and Jacquez, Especially table grapes produced. There are not any Wine production volumes known.
