The white grape variety originates from Spain. Synonyms are Martorella, Moltonach, Montañesa, Montona, Montònec, Montònech, Montònega, Montòneo, Montònero, Parellada Blanc, Perellada, Verda Grossa. It was already widespread in Aragon in the 14th century under different names. In the 15th century, the German doctor (personal physician to the king's daughter Mary of Castile) and amateur winemaker Jaume Roig (+1478) prepared a Montònec white wine, which King Juan II (1378-1479) was delighted with.
