Verdejo Serrano

The white grape variety originates from Spain. Synonyms are Perepinhao Portalegre and Rufete Blanca. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it originates from a presumably natural cross between Cayetana Blanca x unknown partner. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see Molecular Genetics). Despite seemingly suggestive synonyms or morphological similarities, it should not be confused with the varieties Verdejo, Verdejo de Salamanca, Verdelho or Verdello. It is a parent of the Rufete variety. The almost extinct variety was revived at the beginning of the 21st century. It is grown in the province of Salamanca (Castile-León) on the border with Portugal. However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
