The red grape variety is an open-pollinated seedling of Clinton. Thus, at least genes of Vitis riparia x Vitis labrusca are included. Synonyms are Clinton Vialla, La Touratte and Semis de Clinton. The hybrid was selected by the French breeder Durieu de Maisonneuve in France and used mainly as a rootstock in the wake of the phylloxera disaster in the 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was also cultivated in Austria as a direct carrier for wine production. No stock was reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
