The French vine breeder Jean-Louis Vidal (1880-1976) was active in the Charente region of Cognac in the 1930ies and 1940ies. He created more than 50 new varieties, which were mostly named after the breeder plus a serial number. Most of them were hybrids from crossings of European and American vines. Most of them were Kelter varieties, but also some rootstocks. Celtic varieties are Rami (Vidal 119), Select (Vidal 100 T) and Vidal Blanc (Vidal 256).
