Vidiano

The white grape variety originates from Crete-Greece. Synonyms are Abidiano, Abudiano, Abydiano, Avidiano, Avydiano and Bidiano. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2009, it is closely related to the varieties Thrapsathiri and Vilana, which are also found on the island; however, the parentage is unknown. The early to medium ripening vine is moderately resistant to downy mildew, but susceptible to powdery mildew. It yields alcohol-rich white wines with fresh acidity and aromas of lime, apricot and tropical fruit. The almost extinct variety has been reactivated by some producers through new plantings. However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
