Vincent

This red grape variety is a very complex interspecific new variety between Vineland 370-628 (Lomanto x Seneca) x Seibel 10-878 (Chelois). Synonyms or breeding numbers are V 49-431 and Vineland 49-431. It must not be confused with the variety St. Vincent. Genes of Vitis aestivalis, Vitis champinii, Vitis cinerea, Vitis labrusca, Vitis lincecumii, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera are present. The hybrid was crossed in 1947 by the breeder O. A. Bradt in Ontario-Canada. The late-maturing, high-yielding vine is resistant to frost down to minus 26 °Celsius, but is susceptible to powdery mildew. It produces dark-coloured, rather low-tannin red wines with aromas of cherries and plums. The variety is mainly used in cuvées as a Teinturier (colouring grape). In 2016, 8 hectares of vineyards were designated in the US state of New York (Finger Lakes) (Kym Anderson statistics). Small populations are also reported to exist in Canada.
