The international wine fair was first held under the name "Giornate del Vino Italiano" (Italian Wine Days) in September 1967 in the Palazzo della Gran Guardia in Verona (Italy). In 1969, 130 producers exhibited their products, which was still quite modest. It took place under the name "Vinitaly" from 1971 onwards, when wines of the DOC classification, newly introduced in 1963, were exhibited for the first time, as well as an auction of high-priced wines. Since 1980, the event has been held over a period of five days in April. The Concorso Enologico Internazionale wine competition is a fixed item on the programme. In addition, there are also "Vinitaly On Tour Events", which have so far been held in the cities of New Delhi (India), Moscow and St. Petersburg (Russia), Chicago, Miami, Palm Beach and Washington (USA), as well as Shanghai (China), among others. There are about 150,000 visitors from 140 countries. See also under wine events.
