Vinometer

Measuring device for fast determination of the alcohol content from Wine and wine-like drinks, It consists of a tube open at both ends, which is provided with a scale. The operation is based on the phenomenon of lowering the surface tension of water by alcohol, as well as the capillary effect (rising of liquids in narrow glass tubes against the gravitational force up). The higher the alcohol content (and thus the lower surface tension), the less an alcohol-water mixture is held against the force of gravity in the capillary. The result is in volume displayed, the measurement accuracy is about 0.5% at a temperature of 20 ° Celsius. The measuring range is only up to 25%, which is why the vinometer for distillates not suitable. A high content residual sugar in wine affects the accuracy of the measurement. For other methods of measuring wine ingredients, see analytical test,
