The communal appellation lies as an enclave in the centre of the Mâconnais area in Burgundy. It was created in 1998 by merging the areas of Mâcon-Clessé and Mâcon-Viré. The vineyards cover over 400 hectares of vines in the communes of Clessé, Laizé, Montbellet and Viré in the department of Saône-et-Loire. White wines made from Chardonnay are permitted. Well-known producers are Domaine André Bonhomme, Domaine Maurice Bressand, Jadot, Domaine Merlin, Domaine Michel, Domaine Philippe, Maison Rickaert, Domaine Sainte Barbe and the cooperative Cave Coopérative de Viré.
