Virginia Tech

The "Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University" in Blacksburg in the US state of Virginia was founded in 1872. To support the wine industry, the Enology-Grape Chemistry Group was created in 1986 as part of the Department of Food Science and Technology, with a focus on teaching and research. Research is focused on analytical chemistry with the aim of understanding the relationship between vineyard and grape aroma and improving the taste potential of grapes through appropriate winemaking methods. In Winchester, in the northern Shenandoah Valley, research is conducted on cold stress physiology, vine and vineyard management to optimize yield and grape quality, grape variety and clone evaluation, and pest control.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
