Vitis monticola

One of about 30 American species or wild vines with the complete botanical name Vitis monticola Buckl. A description was first published by the US biologist Buckley in 1862, which is also included in the name. Botanical synonyms or old names are Vitis aestivalis var. monticola, Vitis champanii, Vitis foexana, Vitis montana and Vitis texana. A trivial synonym is Sweet Mountain Grape. Together with the species Vitis palmata and Vitis vulpina the group Cordifoliae is formed. The vine is found in the southwest of the USA in New Mexico and Texas. It prefers sandy or clay soils and has a high resistance to drought. It has no significance as a wine grape, but due to its characteristics it is used for crossbreeding.
