Short for "Vitis International Variety Catalogue", a comprehensive database on grapevine varieties of the genus Vitis (see under vine systematics). It was founded in 1983 by the Institute for Grapevine Breeding Geilweilerhof in Siebeldingen-Pfalz (Germany), the foundation stone being laid by Professor Dr. Dr. Gerhardt Erich Alleweldt (1927-2005). Initially, support was provided by the OIV (Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin). Since 1996, the database www.vivc.de has been freely accessible on the internet. The aim is to provide comprehensive documentation on all grape varieties as a source of information for breeders, researchers, winegrowers, etc. The database contains over 24,000 entries. The database contains over 24,000 entries on grape varieties.
The VITIS-VEA (VEA = Viticulture and Enology Abstracts), which is also maintained by the Institute, is a comprehensive literature database with viticulture-specific publications on the topics of morphology, physiology and biochemistry of the vine, soil science of viticulture, genetics and vine breeding, phytopathology (plant diseases) and vine protection, cellar technology, business management of viticulture and winery, oenology, microbiology of wine, as well as German-language practical literature. It contains over 60,000 documents and is publicly accessible free of charge. See also under Julius Kühn-Institut.
In the past, you needed a wealth of encyclopaedias and specialist literature to keep up to date in your vinophile professional life. Today, Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one of my best helpers and can rightly be called the "bible of wine knowledge".
