Volitsa Mavri

The red grape variety comes from Greece. Synonyms are Volitsa and Bolitsa Maure. The parentage (parenthood) is unknown. According to one hypothesis it is a descendant of the ancient variety Biturica (Balisca) mentioned by Pliny the Elder (23-79). The presumed connection to the variety Cabernet Sauvignon was disproved by DNA analyses. It was also found that the white variety Volitsa Aspri is not a mutation or related. It is possible that there is a genetic connection with the Muscat Blanc variety. Volitsa Mavri is cultivated in small quantities in Greece on the Peloponnese peninsula. However, no stocks were recorded in 2016 (statistics Kym Anderson).
