Voltis

The white grape variety (breeding no. Colmar 2011 G) is a complex interspecific new variety between Villaris x VRH 3159-2-12 (an intergeneric cross between Vitis vinifera x Muscadinia). It contains genes from Vitis berlandieri, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera, as well as Muscadinia. The hybrid was created in collaboration between INRA (Montpellier, France) and the Julius Kühn Institute (Siebeldingen, Pfalz, Germany) as part of a project started in 2000 for the development of PIWI varieties. Incidentally, the new variety Floreal was also created with the same parents as part of the project. The vine is characterised by a total resistance to powdery mildew as well as a high resistance to downy mildew. At the end of 2002, it was the first PIWI variety to be approved by the INAO and, according to AOC regulations, a limited cultivation of 5 hectares was permitted in Champagne. In the meantime, blind tastings organised by the Comité Champagne have taken place to determine the suitability of the variety as a blending partner for Champagne.
