Weather rules

See below Bauernregeln,

Designation for mostly in rhyme form old folk sayings about the Weather and the usually drastic positive or negative consequences for agriculture. Based on past experience, predictions are made. They have evolved over centuries through close observation of natural events and have been passed down from generation to generation. The forecasts often refer to a so-called Lostag. Lostage (also Lurtage) are fixed days in the calendar, according to ancient folk belief predictions about the weather conditions of the following weeks, months and less of the coming year allow the best time of various agricultural activities (such as sowing or harvesting) determine and predictions over the allow expected harvest.

Bauernregeln - If Epiphany is bright and clear, there's good wine in the new year!

The term "Lostag" derives from "Los", an old word for "fate". During the determination of the Lostage one oriented oneself often on the name days or anniversaries (usually days of death) catholic saints. An example is St. Gallus, where in ancient times the vintage should be finished (16 October). This day was also the end of the temporary work for the former Weingarten guardian, The respectability or correctness of peasant rules has always been called into question what with sayings like "Crows the cock of dung, the weather changes - or it stays as it is" documented. Statistical investigations in the 1990s revealed an astonishingly high degree of accuracy, taking into account the area of origin of the respective farmers' rule. Taking into account the 10-day date shift resulting from the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1582, supporters even believe that the degree of reliability increases.

However, the scientific explanation for the high accuracy of the Lostage supply the large-scale weather conditions, which start early or return with high probability annually. The Lostage show only statistical relationships. The weather is not based on them, there is no causal relationship. The probability is between 60 and 90% for individual lost days. By contrast, weather forecasts for the next week are only over 50%. The reason is also that in the former case, often only very general 50:50 statements (rain, does not rain), in the second case, however, far more complex predictions are made. Scientifically, the peasant rules are the area of Esoteric assigned.

In viticulture there are also numerous farmers rules or Lostage. These do not necessarily conform to the rules of general agriculture. Rain at the time of the vintage, for example, is undesirable to the winemaker, but it can be beneficial for a farmer who grows other crops. An example is the saying: "September rain - the farmer's blessing, the winegrower's poison when he meets him." It is striking that grain and wine often have a "common destiny". And now 100 Winzerregeln / Lostage from January to December:

  • Is Epiphany bright and clear, there's good wine in the new year (January 6)
  • Does that have Vinzenz Flood, it is not good for the wine (January 22)
  • To Vincenzen sunshine - brings a lot of grain and...
