A distinction must be made between the State Training and Research Institute and the winery:

LVWO Weinsberg

The State Teaching and Research Institute for Viticulture and Fruit Growing (formerly "Weins- und Obstbauschule Weinsberg") is located in the town of Weinsberg in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. This oldest viticulture school in Germany was established on the initiative and according to the plans of Immanuel August Ludwig Dornfeld (1796-1869), a vine expert working in Weinsberg, and opened in 1868 as the "Royal Viticulture School" under King Karl I of Württemberg (1823-1891). The first head of this viticultural school was Christian Single (1816-1869). The well-known vine breeder August Herold (1902-1973), from whom many new varieties originated, took over the management of the Württemberg Institute for Vine Breeding and Vine Grafting in Weinsberg in 1928. After the Second World War, from 1945 to 1964, he headed his former division, which had been incorporated into the State Teaching and Research Institute for Viticulture and Fruit Growing in Weinsberg in 1947.

The main focus is on the school for technicians and master craftsmen, the school for coopers, experiments in vine and fruit cultivation and cellar management, as well as vine breeding. The new varieties developed here are Acolon, Cabernet Cubin, Cabernet Dorio, Cabernet Dorsa, Cabernet Mitos, Dornfelder, Hegel, Helfensteiner, Heroldrebe, Hölder, Juwel, Kerner, Palas, Ruling, Samtrot (Pinot-Meunier mutation), Silcher, Sauvignon Cita, Sauvignon Gryn, Sauvignon Sary, Sauvitage, Sulmer and Tauberschwarz. A very interesting service is the website "The Virtual Vine Doctor". Here, vine diseases (see vine enemies) can be identified on the basis of pictures and descriptions. The first step is to indicate the symptoms of the disease:

Staatsweingut Weinsberg

Affiliated is the State Wine Estate Weinsberg with the administrator Dr. Günter Bäder and the cellar master Gerhard Wächter. In 2000, a new cellar was put into operation. The vineyards cover 40 hectares in the Württemberg vineyards Ranzenberg and Schemelsberg (Weinsberg), Himmelreich (Gundelsheim) and Burg Wildeck (Abstatt). The main grape varieties cultivated are Riesling, Lemberger (Blaufränkisch), Trollinger (Schiava Grossa), Pinot Noir and Samtrot, as well as smaller quantities of Kerner, Pinot Gris, Acolon, Dornfelder, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Muscat, Cabernet Mitos, Cabernet Dorio, Cabernet Dorsa and Cabernet Cubin. When naming the wines, the grape variety is in the foreground. About 250,000 bottles of wine are produced annually. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines, verjus, brandy, grape seed oil, wine jelly, raspberry vinegar and plum liqueur are also produced. The winery is a member of VDP, HADES and Deutsches Barrique-Forum.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
