Weldra

The white grape variety (also K2) is a new South African cross between Chenin Blanc x Ugni Blanc (Trebbiano Toscano). The cross was made in 1978 in South Africa by Prof. Christiaan Johannes Orffer (1926-2008). The same parents also produced the Chenel variety. This high-yielding vine was specially bred for warm climates with intensive artificial irrigation and the rot resistance that this requires. It is also resistant to powdery mildew. It yields high-acid white wines that are often used for distillation. In 2016, only two hectares of vines were recorded, with a strong downward trend (Kym Anderson statistics).
