The white grape variety originates from Hungary. There are about 60 synonyms, which indicates great age and formerly wide distribution. Some of them are Augster Biely, Augster Blanc, Augster Gelb, Bajor Buher, Cascarolo, Cserbajor Fehér, Fehér Gohér, Frühweiße, Grüner Lagler, Ragusana, Ranina, Som Bajor, Török Gohér, Weißer Lagler and Weißer Fingerhut. It must not be confused/equated with the Italian variety Cascarolo Bianco, as the pomologist Hermann Goethe (1837-1911) wrongly assumed. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2012, it originated from a presumably natural cross between Alba Imputotato x Lisztes Fehér. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see Molecular genetics). The variety was a parent in the Blue Augster and Tihanyi varieties. It is an all-female grape variety. It is suitable as table grape and wine grape. It is cultivated in very small quantities in the Balatonboglár, Eger, Somló and Tokaj-Hegyalja areas. In 2016, one hectare of vineyard was recorded (Kym Anderson).
