Willbacher

The red grape variety originates from Germany. Synonyms are Blauer Willbacher and Wildbacher. It was rediscovered in 1995 in a vineyard already planted in 1927 by the winegrower Richard Boch in Heppenheim's Maiberg (Hessian Bergstrasse). A total of 13 vines were taken by experts from Geisenheim and planted at the institute for further research. In cooperation with experts from the Klosterneuburg Viticulture Institute and Graz(Austria), it was determined in 2001 through DNA analysis that there are four Wildbacher types. The Bergsträßer type is not identical to the Blauer Wildbacher variety cultivated in Styria. According to initial results, the Willbacher is probably a variety or identical with the variety Schwarzer Elbling. A small stand of the grape variety was planted in the Heppenheimer Steinkopf vineyard. In 2016, no stocks were reported under this name (Kym Anderson).
