The first Austrian wine chain was opened in 1993 by the Viennese entrepreneur and wine collector Heinz Kammerer with six shops in Wien, Linz and Graz founded. In the years that followed, Salzburg, Bregenz and Klagenfurt followed. Another milestone was the opening of the then revolutionary online shop in 1998. In 1999 the first WEIN & CO Bar was born on the Vienna Naschmarkt. At the end of 2018, the company was sold to Hawesko Holding AG sold. The management was replaced in 2019 by Willi Klinger, the former long-time head of ÖWM (Austria Wine Marketing).
The company concept of “wining-dining-shopping” (already in eight wine bars), that is, buying the best wines every day until midnight and enjoying them at a bargain price, is still unique worldwide. In April 2011, the first "Shop in Shop" was opened in a MERKUR in cooperation with the Rewe Group. With 20 branches (including 7 with attached wine bar) throughout Austria, Wein & Co employs more than 270 people. Every employee has the opportunity at the expense of the company Wine Academy Austria to visit. In addition, there is an Internet trade that supplies a third of customers from Germany.
WEIN & CO sees itself as a premium brand that stands for enjoyment and lifestyle. The aim is to offer the best range with the best service at the best possible price. A total of around 2,000 wines and sparkling wines, 200 spirits and 300 delicatessen items, glasses and accessories are sold. Wines from all over the world account for around 50% of sales. In addition to a number of additional features, such as free tasting and delivery, volume discounts or the annual bonus with the VinoCard, the company also sees itself as an intermediary for wine. In addition to the extensive range of wine seminars (ABCs of wine), they also focus on art and cultural events and organize the largest domestic wine festival (MondoVino).
