The city is located 120 kilometers southeast of Florence in the upper Chiana Valley, is one of the most beautiful in Tuscany and is referred to as the "Pearl of the Renaissance". Once a year in August, the wine barrel race "Bravio delle Botti" takes place, during which representatives of the eight "hostile" districts roll five double-barreled wine barrels through the steep, narrow streets. Montepulciano was home to two popes and Paul III. (1468-1549) preferred the wine of his hometown to all others. His cellar master praised him in 1549 as a "perfect wine".
