Plant species - Christmas rose

Earlier in Germany especially in the palatinate common name for the Christmas rose (also Christwurz, Schneerose, black hellebore, Christmas rose), whose white or reddish flowers already appear from December to February. She may not with the eglantine (Apple Rose) are confused. The wine flower or Christmas rose was once considered sacred and they wrote her the power to cure the plague. According to ancient popular belief, the prospects for the coming fall and thus for the vintage the more favorable, the more and more magnificent the flower blossomed around the Christmas time. After an old recipe, these flowers were used to make a Christmas rose wine. Two small cut snow roses (two ounces) were mixed with two pounds of Spanish wine, placed in a vial during the dog days (from July 23rd to August 23rd) in the sun. According to another recipe, this was made from the dried rhizome. The mystic Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) recommended Christmas rose wine as a remedy for circulatory insufficiency, stomach cramps and vomiting.
