Winter protection

Various measures to protect the vine against frost in cold areas in winter. In the past it was common practice to cover the vines with soil. This took advantage of the fact that the temperature below the surface of the earth only drops to a few degrees below zero, while the air temperature can be as low as 20°Celsius. However, due to the high effort involved, this is only practiced in Russia, some Asian countries and China. A less elaborate method is to cover only the shoots necessary for next year's growth with earth. The usual procedure today when pruning vines is to make sure that there are spare shoots for frozen parts of the vine. See also under vineyard care.
