Producer description of "Weingut Josef Wurzinger"

The winery is located in the municipality of Tadten, near the Hungarian border in the Burgenland wine-growing region of (Austria). It has been managed by Josef Wurzinger since 1991, who converted the formerly mixed farm to viticulture and fruit growing. The vineyards cover 15 hectares of vines in the vineyards Kreuzjoch, Oberzick and Unterjoch. They are 60% planted with the red wine varieties Zweigelt, St. Laurent, Blaufränkisch, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and 40% with the white wine varieties Welschriesling, Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Natural viticulture is practised. Only healthy and grapes are harvested by hand and checked again afterwards.

The white wines are always matured classically in steel tanks. The strong red wines (Kreuzjoch, St. Laurent) are matured after fermentation and biological acid reduction in mainly new barriques, the traditional red wines from the Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch varieties in used barriques and large wooden barrels for at least 6 to 16 months, depending on the wine type and maturity. Only in years with suitable weather conditions are sweet wines also produced. The premium wines include, for example, the red wine cuvée Kreuzjoch (from all 5 red wine varieties), Blauer Zweigelt vom Heideboden and Blaufränkisch M. Every year, 55,000 bottles of wine are produced. An apple brandy is also produced.
