By far the largest wine-growing region in the US state of California, stretching over 600 kilometres from north to south across more than half of the state. It is sometimes also called the Inland Valleys or Delta & Inland. To the west are the two regions Central Coast and North Coast, and in the eastern centre the Sierra Foothills region. The huge Central Valley covers a total of 220,000 hectares of vineyards. Of this, 140,000 hectares are planted with wine grapes and 80,000 hectares are used for the important production of table grapes and sultanas in California. The base wines for over 90% of California's spirits are also produced here. The Central Valley is one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world.
